We are a day school in Benitachell where most of the learning happens in conversation around a table rather than from the front of a room. That only works with teachers who know their subject well enough to let a discussion go where it needs to go.

Ten to twelve in a class
Small enough that you know every child: what they need more time on, what bores them, what is going on at home. No crowd control, no anonymous back row.
Harkness, properly
Students and teacher around one table as equals, working through ideas by discussion. It asks more of a teacher than a lesson plan does, and it is far more interesting to teach.
Your subject is yours
We will not hand you a scheme of work and ask you to deliver it. You shape how your subject is taught here, and you are trusted to do it.
A team that sees you
Everyone is on first-name terms, including with the students. If something is not working, you say so and we look at it together.

What we ask
Beyond the paperwork, these are the things that matter to us.
- 1A teaching qualification or a degree in your subject, and the ability to explain it to a fifteen year old without dumbing it down.
- 2References we can call. We do call them, and we ask about more than punctuality.
- 3Experience of small groups, or a real appetite for it. Teaching twelve children in a discussion is not a scaled down version of teaching thirty.
- 4The two certificates described below, before your first day.
Every person who works here is checked, and checked again.
We work with other people's children. That is the whole job, and it is why this part of our process has no flexibility in it at all. Nobody starts at Open Learning, in any role, without a clean and current criminal record check, and we verify it ourselves rather than taking a copy at face value.
Spanish law requires the Certificado de Delitos de Naturaleza Sexual for anyone working with minors, and it reaches further today than it did a few years ago. Countries that did not share what they knew about each other now do, so a conviction abroad surfaces where once it might not have.
We could stop there and be entirely within the law. We do not. On top of the legal requirement we ask every member of staff for the International Child Protection Certificate, and we no longer accept a basic national check such as the British DBS in its place. The international certificate costs considerably more and takes longer to obtain. We ask for it anyway.
- Certificado de Delitos de Naturaleza SexualThe Spanish register of sexual offences, required by law for anyone working with minors. Checked for every member of our staff, without exception, before a first day.
- International Child Protection CertificateIssued by ACRO in the United Kingdom for people working with children outside their own country. It draws on what police forces share internationally, which is exactly the gap a single national check leaves open. This is what we ask for instead of a basic DBS.
